This week, Al-Shabaab, a terrorist group operating out of Somalia, called for attacks upon the Mall of America. What possible connection could a shopping mall in Minnesota have with a Somali terrorist group? Well, Minnesota boasts one of the largest Solmali immigrant populations in the United States. Reports were out as late as summer of 2014, that members from that community had traveled to Syria to take part in jihad there. So, there you go.
The call for attacks prompted the usual response from authorities urging us to “be careful” and “stay vigilant.” Ok...stay vigilant, huh? What does that mean?
Anxiety over terrorism is high right now. Each time we read headlines about an attack in Paris, Sydney, or New York, gun sales spike. People want to do something – anything – to make themselves feel safer.
The concern is understandable. Fear lives and thrives in the unknown. And right now, there’s plenty of unknown to go around.
Sun Tzu, the venerated general and military tactician of ancient China, gives us sage advise as we struggle with how to do personal security. His words from the Art of War are as relevant for us today as they were when he penned them over 2,500 years ago.
“Know yourself and your enemy and you need not fear the outcome of a hundred battles.” Sun Tzu
When you confront a problem by learning and understanding it, you begin to solve it. Dispelling the unknown is the key to taking steps that matter.

The recent call by Al-Shabaab for attacks against the Mall of America put a few people on edge this week, and rightfully so. Terrorists do and have targeted shopping malls in the past. With every call for attack carries with it warnings and alerts by the government to "stay vigilant" and to "be careful." But what does that all mean?
How does one "be vigilant?" Our webinar will take you through the information to understand the true nature of the terrorist threat, the types of terrorists out there and how they operate. Finally, we'll give you some concrete steps that you can take to help keep yourself and those you care about safe. Single Operative is a term I picked up a somewhere a few years ago and it's the essence what this blog is all about. A single operative is someone who through physical and mental conditioning, has developed the ability to successfully to operate in an unfamiliar or hostile environment.
During my career, I've traveled to Eastern and North Africa; the Middle East; and few other places. Some were nice. Others....not so much. Sometimes I would go with a unit or be part of a small team, but I've traveled alone too. I've always found....
Exciting news! Rubicon Training Group has made news once again - this time in Blue Force Tracker.
Blue Force Tracker is a new aggregator that covers stories on the US military and security issues. What makes them so unique is that their group of journalists are primarily made up of veterans. They "get it" when it comes to the military and are tirelessly working to bridge the gap between the civilian and military world.
We at RTG are big fans of Blue Force Tracker, so you can imagine what an honor it was to sit down for an interview with them and to have our story covered on their news site.
In the article, we talk about the work we're doing in our tactical and security training programs to bridge the gap between skill set and mindset. So click here to check it out. Let us know what you think!
Despite the outstanding job that federal and local law enforcement agencies have done to protect us from a major terror attack like those we experienced on 9/11, experts have made it clear: it' not a matter of if the next attack will occur, but when. Though smaller in scale, the recent attacks in Sydney, New York City, and Paris, serve to remind us that the specter of terrorism still casts a dark shadow over us. And many wonder if there's anything the individual can do to prepare for the next attack.
I sat down with Larry Henry, of 5News in Fayetteville, Arkansas to discuss some simple steps that everyone can do to make themselves a little more prepared for the next attack.
So, what are you doing to get yourself and your loved ones more prepared?
